Fortune and Misfortune: Parish Chest, Poor Law, and Bankruptcy

The Parish Chest and Poor Law. The records from the Parish Chest provide a contemporary and revealing insight into the social fabric of the parish and how the parish dealt with issues of providing relief to the poor, aged, and infirm. With the creation of the Poor Law Unions in the 1800s, this responsibility passed to civil administration with its resulting copious and detailed record keeping.Mid-Nineteenth Century Bankruptcy in England. This presentation will examine the difference between bankrupts and insolvent debtors, and look at some available sources to discover more information about those people unable to pay their debts.Mid-Nineteenth Century Bankruptcy in Australia: an untapped source of information for family historians. For some, bankruptcy was just a part of doing business but it could also change lives—and for us—leave a paper trail. This presentation will look at some examples of personal and corporate insolvency and show how laws and public attitudes could change over time.

Using microfilm and indexes workshop

On 19 August, Queensland State Archives will be offering two sessions for researchers to celebrate National Family History Month 2014 - the 'Using microfilm and indexes workshop' starting at 8.30 am and the 'Getting started with research' seminar starting at 10.00 am. Come along to either or both sessions - bookings essential.New microfilm equipment and Public Search Room computers have been installed by Queensland State Archives to provide enhanced functionality for researchers.  Learn to use the Archives' new microfilm equipment, including scanning and saving records to USB from microfilm. The session will also teach you how to use our new Public Search Room computers which will provide access to the catalogue, the Archives' website, the Internet and index resources.You will be required to bring your own USB device. Entry is free. Bookings essential due to limited places for a maximum of eight attendees.

Local community support worker, Gail Mulhern, has been researching 15 of her ancestors who were transported to Van Diemen’s Land in the 1800s.  Of these, Gail is most passionate about Eliza Davis, who was sentenced to hang for infanticide after her son’s tragic accidental death, but who was instead sent to Tasmania for life. GSC Workshop Saturday 2 August 2014 9.30 am to 12.00 Writing workshop with Carolyn The writing session is a half day workshop dealing with basic writing for future publication.  Subjects covered will include getting notes together,which program will I choose ? writing to plot and theme , making your story interesting and getting it together.The session will also cover preparation and layout for publishing, including adding images to your text.Anyone attending the workshop should come with a prepared sentence or short paragraph about what they are planning to write regarding either family history or life story, and bring pencil and note book to write short exercises during the course of the workshop.Cost is $8.00 per person
